My outfit from the other day. I know the photo is pretty bad, I’m still trying to get used to using my (newish) camera and find somewhere that I can sit it to take photos of myself.

Unrelated to the photo it’s so cold today! It’s around 12°C! Maybe not cold for too many people, but when you live in Queensland that’s super cold!

The charity shop is called Age Concern, it’s 3 minutes away from my house and the money goes to a good cause. Not to mention it’s one of my favourite items of clothing and people…

This! I recently got some amazing bargains at the Asthma Foundation charity/op shop. I’ve also seen a lot of things in so called “vintage” shops that are reproductions and not originals.

A fairly new (2007) Japanese fashion/lifestyle trend, dedicated to living a cheerful, simple, natural life of a girl in the forest. “mori” in Japanese means “forest.”

The fashion style is loose, light and airy, layered with warm, bulky sweaters and scarves and tough boots for navigating the wilderness.

the style utilizes pale colors, like oatmeal, light pink, light greens and browns, as well as rich gem tones like sapphire and ruby. Crocheted and knitted items accessorize the look.

The aesthetic has also leaked over into interior design. Rooms inspired by mori girl are often filled with sunlight but clear of clutter save for a few spots stacked with old books, antiques and a vase of sunflowers. Mori rooms often look like cabins from a fairytale.

The lifestyle seems content with solitude, however it doesn’t close itself off from a social life intentionally. A mori girl has no qualms about going off into the forest alone or enjoying a cup of tea and and an old book in her favorite coffee shop by herself.

She is intelligent, secure and confident in herself, and as such is never loud or overbearing. She just prefers to live unfettered and uncluttered. Mori girls carry themselves with a quiet strength.

There’s also a boy version of the fashion emerging recently.

It’s been a bad week. I received some awful news, the cold weather is playing havoc with my back and I just can’t seem to shake off this feeling of being sad. Part of me wants to go to bed and sleep until everything is better, which I know isn’t a good way to deal with my problems, so I’m trying to convince myself that I should have a shower and get dressed in something pretty and meet some friends for coffee a little later on.

Re-purposed dress.

This was originally a lace empire cut dress that didn’t fit me, so I separated the top and bottom to make this skirt and I am in the middle of making a bolero jacket form the top part. The lower layer is tea-dyed cotton and reaches the floor when I’m wearing it.

I love my Dad. It’s a wet and rainy day today and he’s driving over to my place to drop off my Mum’s sewing machine. This means I can finish the skirt and bolero jacket I’m in the middle of making!

I had started to make them last week, but my sewing machine has broken and needs to be repaired (if it can be - it’s pretty old and belonged to my Grandmother). I had lent it to my Mum before she got a new sewing machine and when it came back to me it didn’t work. But now I can sew again!

It also means that when I go op-shopping later in the week I can look for fabric as well as clothes.

(Note: Op-shop is short for Opportunity Shop, a name we tend to call second hand/thrift stores in Australia. I think it’s a cute name, so I tend to use it more than thrift or second hand shop)
